On Election Day, Tuesday, November 8, bloggers Lisa Duggan (The Motherhood Blog) and Avital Nathman (The Mamafesto) organized the first Parenting Blog-In, encouraging bloggers to simultaneously post an open letter to the 2012 presidential campaigns, in what the organizers called “a new form of democratic protest called the Blog-In.”
Lisa and Avital explained that they came up with the idea of writing a letter, and then it morphed into the idea of a Blog-In pretty naturally from there. Lisa explained, “The Blog-In pays homage to the historic sit-ins of the non-violent social movements of the 20′s, 40′s, 60′s & 70′s, etc. And gives a nod to the current Occupy movements.”
With 46 bloggers participating (full list here) and Lisa Belkin covering the story on her Huffington Post column, as well as many tweeting with the hashtag #BlogIn2011 the first blog-in was considered a success by the organizers.
When asked if the organizers envisioned more Blog-Ins in the future, Avital responded “You never know. I definitely felt inspired by how many people shared our letter (and their own voices).”
And Lisa added “I can absolutely see us using this form again when the next need arises (after more debates, maybe!), but more importantly I hope to see other organizations take the idea and run with it!”
