Social media is changing how just about every industry markets its merchandise and services, and footwear is no exception. In the lead up to every conference women bloggers start posing questions about what they should wear, especially when it comes to shoes, so it makes sense that companies like Farylrobin (our BlogHer '10 sponsor) would be interested in connecting directly with consumers through blogs, Twitter and other social tools.

While at BlogHer '10 we caught up with several bloggers who shared what makes footwear appealing to them. Plus we got a chance to speak with the actual designer behind the NYC based label, Faryl Robin Morse, whose sexy and bold shoes are also created to be comfortable and affordable.

"There really is a me and I hear you," said Faryl who stays in tune with the blogosphere. She not only looks for feedback online but also makes changes based on what she sees consumers saying.

Watch the video below:

Just this week Footwear News magazine wrote about our partnership with Farylrobin in their feature story and said:

"Footwear firms across categories are now turning to Internet personalities - from moms sharing maternal wisdom on the best kids' shoes to the thousands of sneakerheads pining for the coolest kicks - more than ever to help spread their brand messages and generate natural buzz. Industry players said blogs have gained clout and relevance because they can post information about a company or show its product much faster than traditional media."

To connect with the company follow @farylrobin on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook where you'll find details on the latest trends and shoes, plus exclusive deals.

{Bloggers featured in the video include Haley Quarles of Love, Life, Family and Then Some, Kim Orlandini of Kim Sue Ellen, Jennifer Grace of MissDisgrace, and Caitlin White of Pacifier In My Pocket.}

A handful of Chicago bloggers who opted out of BlogHer '10 decided to hold their own meet-up last week. Chicago social media mavens Hope Bertram, Sara Fisher, and Kim Moldofsky organized an evening of networking, conversation and fun at Theory Chicago.

The group was treated to a private screening of Melissa Pierce’s film, Life in Perpetual Beta, a crowd-sourced documentary that explores the ways technology is changing our culture. Melissa, a mom of three who created the most of the film while her young ones napped, celebrated her birthday with the group. Chicago singer and newbie blogger, Jan James, wowed the women with her soulful rendition of “Happy birthday.”

Inspired by the Tutus for Tanner 5K at BlogHer, attendees posed wearing the (now) official Chicago tutu in exchange for a small donation to the cause.

Nicole of Help! Mama Remote called the get-together “a night of fun, laughter, hope, and inspiration,” that left her wondering how a few hours together with people she’d never met before could be so impactful.

There was little in the way of swag, no dance floor, and the party was over by 10:00, but there were many cards exchanged, lots of laughs shared, and several friendships forged during the event.

The last night of BlogHer '10 ended on a bang with back-to-back dance parties. Sparklecorn (hosted by MamaPop.com) was full of razzle dazzle with over 1,000 bloggers accessorized in glowing necklaces and bracelets. Most hit the dance floor while the rest chomped down on pretzels, chex mix and unicorn pops.

A glorious and over-the-top cake is now part of the Sparklecorn lore. This year it was a unicorn prancing in front of a castle and was once again the centerpiece of the event. To ensure bloggers who came in a bit late could see it in its full glory, sheet cake was served first.

For many it was the last party of the conference and as the pixie dust settled, BlogHer '10 came to an end.

hershey's train blogher '10

Early on Thursday, August 5, about 30 DC area bloggers boarded an Amtrak train in Baltimore, MD headed to New York City for BlogHer 2010. The four hour train trip was sponsored by Hershey's in conjunction with the Hershey's S'mores suite at BlogHer.

Each rider was sent a S'mores goodie bag from Hershey's before the trip consisting of:

  • Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
  • Hershey's Chocolate Bars
  • Nabisco Graham Crackers
  • Skewers for roasting marshmallows in a S'mores case

The ride was filled with laughter, anticipation, excitement and a lot of talking. It was an excellent opportunity to get to know other local bloggers while enjoying a relaxing trip to BlogHer. A perfect beginning to the conference.

After two days of sessions, keynotes, parties, networking, eating and learning, they were ready to take the "Road Trip 2 BlogHer" back to the DC area. Somehow they all managed to lug their bags plus all the extras received over the weekend back to the train station.

The ride home was a bit more quiet. Many slept or quietly tried to digest all the information from the weekend. It was a nice four hour ride back to the reality of their daily lives.

The hashtags #Smores and #RoadTrip2BlogHer were used and the trip was organized by Amy Lupold Bair, Lara DiPaola, and Amy Mascott.

loews blogher '10 event

On Sunday at BlogHer '10 bloggers were treated to a "Taste of Loews" hosted by Carol Cain of NYCityMama and Loews Hotels.  Guests and their families were chaffeured to and from the event by Chevrolet which was just the beginning of the pampering.  Upon arrival the kids were given gift bags by FisherPrice and parents were ushered into a room where chefs stood at every station waiting to cater to every culinary whim.

There was an omlette station, eggs benedict with braised short ribs, sushi by master sushi chef "Fuji" Fujita, a huge gourmet cheese spread and even a yogurt bar.  For those feeling especially indulgent, chocolates and a huge assortment of mouth-watering desserts were on hand to compliment the brunch as well.

To help the parents enjoy the experience, Loews teamed up with FisherPrice and debuted their newest toys in their lineup - much to the delight of all the children.  Some of the biggest hits included their soon-to-be-released iXL Learning System and the toy lots of little boys will be begging for at Christmas, Follow Me Thomas.

Loews' Loves Kids program is one of the industry's most comprehensive family programs. They provide gift bags on arrival and a special "On Call for Kid's" closet filled with toys, books, and travel essentials such as car seats, strollers and even portable bouncers to soothe, stimulate and entertain the littlest Loews guest.

Rumor has it that they're considering hosting a post-BlogHer brunch every year.

The official BlogHer '10 party "A Green Affair" hosted by 3 Green Angels gave bloggers who are on a mission to live green a chance to mix and mingle with each other and companies interested in partnering with them.

Healthy Child Healthy World gave out their pocket shopping guides that cover Healthy Cleaning, Baby Food, School Lunches and Healthy Sunscreen options.

Guests learned about Microsoft's newest initiative Hohm, an energy monitoring device that attaches to your standard meter and displays home energy data in real-time. The hope is that once families have that information they can then use that knowledge to initiate energy conservation plans.

A consistent theme was showcasing how small changes can make a huge impact on the future.

Bosch, who recently hosted a blogger event in Arizona, was also on hand to show off their newest line of washers and dryers, which are greener and leaner in energy consumption.

blogher '10 new york city taxis

The NYC Night Bus Tour occurred on Friday, August 6th. It was a guided tour, and cost only $10 for two hours of touring the city in a coach bus! It was a great way to get an overview of some city highlights, meet people, win prizes, and learn a bit of New York history.

Hosted by @NYCityMama and @ToursForFun, the tour began at about 10:00pm. The bus first stopped at Rockefeller Center, and passengers exited to take pictures. Completely illuminated, the Center was beautiful to see at night! The weather was perfect, so walking around Rockefeller Center was wonderful. Passengers re-boarded the bus, and the tour guide really found his groove. He was so knowledgeable about the city’s landmarks, offering passengers tidbits that almost seemed like historical secrets. He spoke with confidence, and remembered that for most on board, this was their first trip to New York.

The bus toured through Times Square, passed Bryant Park, down 47th (or Diamond) Street, and even took in a few streets of Chinatown. The next and last time passengers exited to take pictures was at the South Seaport, where the views of the Brooklyn Bridge were amazing.

Throughout the tour, tweets were flying under the hash tag #NYCnite. Prizes donated by the New Victory Children’s Theater, the Intrepid Museum, On Location Tours, and the Litzky PR Company were given out to passengers that correctly answered New York trivia questions. Each passenger also received a bag of Ocean Spray Pomegranate Craisins.

Overall, the New York City Night Bus Tour was a fabulous way to see some New York City landmarks. A great way to spend a late night in the city!

icandy blogher hair party

The invite said "There will hot male model bartenders, signature cocktails, beauty and style treats courtesy of iCandy" and all I could think was, "YES PLEASE!" You see this mom had her three year old give her an impromptu (surprise) haircut just the other day. Preoccupied with school, especially my final exams, I thought nothing of my daughter switching her role playing from doctor to hairstylist... not to mention the alluring scissors that was sitting in my medical kit. That missing chunk of hair has taught me one lesson I will never forget... needless to say, I needed some fixing ASAP.

What I got treated to was 15 minutes of magic by the fabulous Frankie Foye of Hair Rules Salon. By the end of my treatment, I was tranformed into a REAL person, not an overly exhausted mom/student/wife/blogger and now was ready to mingle.

Checking in with my fellow mommas we all couldn't believe how gorgeous our transformations were. Hot mommas united, we all walked out a different, even better version of ourselves thanks to Nicole Feliciano and Elina Furman Landauer of Mamaista, ready to rock on with iCandy strollers to complete our look.

soyjoy brunch

On Sunday morning SOYJOY hosted a brunch and discussion on healthy eating for bloggers who were attending the BlogHer conference in New York City. The brunch was held in the Estrella Penthouse of Le Parker Meridien and provided bloggers with a beautiful view of the city.

Attendees had a chance to talk with the other people at their table while enjoying a delicious assortment of breakfast and lunch foods. After brunch the panelists were introduced. The experts that were going to speak and answer questions were Cynthia Sass, Jackie Newgent, and Harley Pasternak (who joined virtually).

First to speak was Cynthia Sass, a registered dietician and the author of the New York Times best seller The Flat Belly Diet. She spoke about why snacking is important, when people should snack, and how they should snack. She stressed the importance of thinking about snacks as a way to tide your body over until the next meal and said that one should never let more than five hours go by without eating. When it came to choosing the right snack she suggested that people choose whole, fresh and minimally processed foods and combine "good" carbohydrates with a low fat protein and a natural fat source. She also reminded us that "food should be there to meet your body's needs, not your emotional needs".

soyjoy brunch

Next up was Jackie Newgent who is the author of the 2009 cookbook, Big Green Cookbook. She shared 10 tips for naturally healthful snacking. She started out sharing recipes that would make simple fruits and vegetables more interesting and fun. She shared how adding herbs and spices can change the taste of our favorite meals and encouraged attendees to have fun with the presentation of their foods. She also reminded us to "get real" by aiming to combine foods from at least two food groups in everything that we prepared.

The final expert was Harley Pasternak who is a fitness and nutritional expert and author of The 5-Factor World Diet. After watching a video from Harley the attendees had a chance to have a Q&A session with him through Skype. Harley shared some facts about the world's healthiest cultures and some benefits of healthy eating and exercise. When speaking about exercise he said that the "stairs are the absolute best thing you can do".

After the panel of experts each had a chance to speak the floor was open to questions from the attendees. After Q&A the attendees mingled with the experts and had a chance to get their books signed by the authors. Each attendee received a bag with a book and SOYJOY bars as a thank you for attending the event.
