Bloggers Model Swimsuit Confidence For Land’s End

In a continuing trend of bloggers shedding clothing for a cause, Curvy Girls Guide partnered with Land’s End to create and promote a campaign called Nationl Swim Suit Confidence Week.  CGG’s Brittany Gibbons calls it “a movement geared at helping women feel sexy and confident in their bathing suits, no matter what their size, and get back into the pool this year…finally!”

On May 23, all 21 Curvy Girls Guide contributors and dozens of bloggers from around the ‘sphere posted photos of themselves posing in Land’s End swim suits…and nothing more.  Several of the Guide’s writers traveled to Connecticut for an in-studio interview and fashion show on Connecticut Style which can be found on the show’s website.  A TV and radio satellite press tour followed, capped off by a Good Morning America stunt in which the bloggers appeared in Times Square…in their swim suits.

Many women will confess to having issues about appearing before anyone in a swimsuit.  Gibbons and Heather Spohr, co-publisher of Curvy Girls Guide, say the bloggers were professionally fit “in suits and clothing in a room full of people. We got over any jitters REALLY fast.” Yvonne Valtierra, pictured above, said of her new (and clearly justified) swimsuit confidence “I don’t even know who I AM anymore!”
Feedback has been overwhelmingly “amazing and positive.”  In comments, tweets, and emails, readers and viewers are sharing their decisions to “get swimsuits this year because they want to be good role models for their daughters” or that they are happy to be given permission to feel good about themselves.
A week’s worth of walking around in a swimsuit worked its magic not only on the audience, but on the bloggers themselves.  Gibbons says “by the end of the week, we were all so confident in our own skin, the most comfortable I had been all week was on Good Morning America in my swim suit, and that confidence has stuck with me at the pool.”  Emily Elling writes on DesignHERmomma:
Can you say Good Morning America? Nothing says I have swimsuit confidence like strutting your stuff in Times Square for the world to see. Know what else is not at all self-conscious? Watching Emeril Lagasse grill flank steak right before your very eyes at 8:30 in the morning, again, while you’re in your swimsuit.
Spohr says she even went into a store in just her suit. “I actually wore my swimsuit on Memorial Day into Bed Bath and Beyond without any coverup, and then I took my daughter to the beach. I didn’t even think twice about it “

When asked what they see when they view their swimsuit photos, Spohr said “I still see my perceived flaws, but I also know that I’m focusing on the negatives that only matter to me.”  Gibbons added “I think I am preconditioned to see everything I hate about my body, but I’m starting to see all the parts of me that rock.  Thank goodness for boobs, haha.”

Shauna Glenn, a CGG contributor who participated in the Times Square swimsuit appearance, also felt the confidence boost.  “I was proud of the message we were sending. We’re all beautiful. We’re all strong.”

Thank you so much for writing this! The week truly had perfect timing for me both as a woman and mother. My body is the same shape and size as it was a month ago, but now I’m confident that I can go to the community pool and jump into the water with my kids and not worry about what others think about me.

  2. Wow – thanks for the coverage and kind words! We’re so proud of ourselves and each other.

Thanks so much for recognizing this. I had a baby (my 5th) six months ago and have really struggled with getting back to a place of comfort in my own skin.  I did this to force myself into not hiding this summer and to show my girls that it’s OK that everyone’s body types are different. My daughters even took my picture of me in the suit.  It was an awesome experience.

Thanks for writing this!!! I was so nervous when I first got to NYC but I didn’t think twice when I was walking to Times Square in my swimsuit by Thursday….I’m actually looking forward to a lake trip in July!!
